“City to C+: Wonderful creamy quality, chocolate syrup that lingers nicely, subtle, malic acidity provides a nice backdrop for the sweetness of this lot.” -Sweet Maria’s

At first pour, the flavors are a little mixed, but there is a noticeable creaminess to the aftertaste. The acidic flavors have a brightness that balances out as the cup cools. The body definitely has chocolate undertones, a milk chocolate creaminess to it, but it doesn’t have a fullness to it. It’s a pretty clean, simple cup. As it continues to cool, the mouthfeel is smooth, the body is well balanced, and the aftertaste is sweet with hints of cocoa, and lingers just a little.

Overall, I think this first roast was spot on for this bean. The roast was done in a Whirley Pop, with a low flame (gas stove), and was preheated to approximately 350 degrees before the beans were added. After the temperature stabilized at 250, it took 9.5 minutes for the beans to reach first crack, which also allowed for a much more even roast. After first crack started, the roast was allowed to progress for 1 minute before the beans were pulled. They were cooled with a strainer, agitated over an air fan to ensure they did not coast very much after being removed from heat. They reached room temperature within 3 minutes.

I am looking forward to this roast as an easy drinking first cup serving in the morning, the creaminess pairs nicely with the chocolate flavors, and I can see this being a nice cup to enjoy on a lazy day.
